Upper School

The International Thespian Society (ITS) is the Educational Theatre Association’s student honorary organization. ITS recognizes the achievements of high school and middle school theatre students. Since 1929, EdTA has inducted more than 2 million Thespians into ITS. That number continues to grow, with more than 36,000 students from around the country being inducted each year. The Italian National Honor Society for High School Students is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Italian. The purpose of the program is to recognize achievements in Italian as well as to promote a greater understanding and appreciation of Italian culture and civilization.

The AHA Chapter provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding scholarship in the study of Italian language through the wearing of a tri-colored cord at graduation, and the right to wear the official pin of the honor society. The chapter encourages member participation on the Italy Summer Trip. In addition, there is the opportunity for students to experience leadership in serving as officers, directing the initiation ceremony, peer tutoring, and/or leading other chapter events.

Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society with 99,000 student members in June 2013 in more than 2000 schools. It is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school students.

AHA is one of sixty schools in the state of New Jersey to have a chapter. Membership Responsibilities include five hours of peer tutoring per semester done either during the Activity period, free periods, or after school.

The National Business Honor Society provides honor and national recognition for outstanding students in business education programs. The honor society, promotes and recognizes students’ academic achievement in business education on the secondary level, fosters and recognizes leadership skills and character development, helps members grow ethically and socially by promoting and encouraging an interest in business; and encourages member involvement in service learning initiatives.

Any AHA junior or senior who has completed or is currently enrolled her fourth business course and has an 85 or higher overall average and a 90 or higher average in her business related classes is invited to apply. Students must also be members of DECA. Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Members are expected to continue to demonstrate these qualities throughout their membership in the society. The National Business Honor Society is an official division of the National Business Education Association.

Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society is the only national organization for high school juniors and seniors that recognizes excellence in the field of Social Studies. Any accredited public or private high school can apply for a local chapter, through which individuals will be inducted into Rho Kappa Honor Society. Rho Kappa provides national recognition and opportunities for exploration in the social studies. Through its sponsorship of Rho Kappa, NCSS hopes to encourage an interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies.

AHA received its charter to the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society in 2012 and had our first installation of members in 2013. The AHA chapter is the Alice Paul Chapter. The name was chosen because of Alice Paul’s tireless dedication to the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote in 1919. The AHA members are peer tutors.

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for middle/junior high and high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Through more than 5,500 chartered chapters, Tri-M has helped thousands of young people provide years of service through music in schools throughout the world. Tri-M is a program of the National Association for Music Education.

The AHA Chapter of Tri-M is active in the community organizing concerts in the area at a home for retired sisters. They are currently planning to assist an elementary school with activities/materials to enhance their music program.

The Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and/or Portuguese, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP).The SHH was formally organized as the Spanish National Honor Society in 1953. The name was changed to Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica in 1959. At present there are more than 2,000 national and international chapters of the SHH.The mission of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica is to recognize high school achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies.

The National Junior Classical League is an organization for middle and high school students in classical courses. NJCL proudly holds the honor of being one of the largest academic youth organizations in the world. There are over 50,000 members in approximately 1,200 chapters, located in almost every state and in several foreign countries. Established in 1936, the organization seeks to promote the study of Latin and Greek, to benefit students and teachers alike, and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of classical antiquity.

A chapter of the Société honoraire de français offers several potential benefits to a secondary French program. First, it provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding scholarship in the study of French language through selection for membership, the placement of a special seal on the graduate’s diploma, the wearing of a tri-colored cord at graduation, and the right to wear the official emblem/pin of the honor society. Second, the chapter provides a vehicle for focusing activities around French language and literature and also for encouraging member participation in the annual writing contest as well as apply for the annual travel grants. In addition, there is the opportunity for students to experience leadership in serving as officers, directing the initiation ceremony, and/or leading other chapter events.
